[MODEST] Announcement of AMUSE mailing list

Thank you, Arjen!

I'm very pleased to see AMUSE coming of age this way.

After all, during the very first MODEST meeting we
already talked extensively about how to couple our
different codes together, and we gave a number of
code fragments in our first MODEST review paper in
2002. It is really wonderful to see these early
beginnings now being realized in the AMUSE project.

I very much hope that many of you will download the
software and play a bit with it. You don't have to
spend much time with it: as a minimum, reporting
what problems you encountered (or that you didn't
encounter any problems!) on what particular computer
configuration you used, will already be very helpful.
The AMUSE team has been working around the clock to
provide the basic infrastructure, but all in-house.
So now is the time to test things out on a much wider
variety of platforms.

Also, please note that that AMUSE is targeted as much
for observers as for theorists. While theorists can
be expected to extend codes present in AMUSE, it is
equally important that AMUSE will become user-friendly
enough to invite observers to quickly throw together
a few simulation runs, without having to delve into
any of the complexity of the codes -- just like
standard observational software for a major telescope
allows you to make straightforward observations without
having to go into too many details of dealing with the
raw date.

Therefore, any feedback, from light and heavy users
alike, will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Piet

Dear MODEST astronomer,

About 1 year ago, we started the development of the AMUSE framework. In
that year we have constructed the basic framework for performing
multiscale and multiphysics simulations, including applications in
gravitational dynamics, stellar evolution and hydro dynamics. The
current version of the framework can be downloaded from:

www.amusecode.org

AMUSE builds on the community developed MUSE and we want to continue
this tradition with AMUSE. We hope to extend the basic framework into a
production level software environment and invite you to help us do so.
All help is welcome, from installing and sending remarks to contributing
new codes to extending the framework itself.

To facility discussions around AMUSE, we have set up a mailing list on
Google groups at:

http://groups.google.com/group/amusecode

The list is open for all questions or remarks about downloading,
installing, using and developing AMUSE. We expect a modest amount of
traffic on the list (couple of e-mails a week).

Kind regards,

Arjen van Elteren

P.S. To follow the latest developments or contribute to the code, please
send an e-mail with your name and affiliation to the mailing-list or me
(vanelteren at strw.leidenuniv.nl) and we will create an SVN account for
you.
