I agree with Mark H's response to Mark G. A large part of the problems
people had with the automatic dynamic scheduling at BIMA was the
history of the way things were done.
Problems include:
. vested interest in existing scheduling arrangements
. dynamic scheduling works best with an observing chunk which matches the weather,
whereas,
. users have designed their observations and expectations around 8-hr ``tracks''
. input information about the requirements for each project into the scheduling
program was limited by the format of the proposal cover sheet !!
. BIMA data are archived by day and then by project: this makes it less convenient
when the data for a project spans more than one day.
Despite the poor acceptance at BIMA, I still think automatic
dynamic scheduling is appropriate for mm aperture synthesis in general
and the MMA in particular. Single dish observations have a different
set of problems and constraints.
