If you want to avoid the legal problems of gif, there's a FITS to jpeg converter in ftp://ftp.cv.nrao.edu/NRAO-staff/bcotton/software/FITS2jpeg.tar.gz. It needs cfitsio and libjpeg and only does grayscale. -Bill Cotton
