I should have added that syslog simply allows one to filter on alert 
levels, sources, and other basic parameters. It handles host name 
resolution and time stamping.
The message payload could contain most anything (mix of flag and alert 
level bits, etc.) as well as the possibilities Sonja mentions.
In the context of the EVLA, think of it as a way to replace everyone 
multicasting there messages with a server that spools the messages and 
performs some user-configurable "massaging" and prefiltering. It could 
serve as the basis for complex systems such as Checker to be built using 
standard Unix/Linux tools.
