Thanks a lot, Eric.  This was quicker than I expected and much appreciated.

Just to make sure I understand correctly, you mean that the AIPS remark about first run of bandpass being amplitude only is incorrect, right?   

Besides the remark itself, what is the correct data reduction procedure?  

a - The initial run of bandpass calibration should indeed not solve for the phases (using BPASSP(1) as you say), which are then fixed by the second run of BPASS after the fringe fitting
b - it is ok to correct the phases in the initial run of bandpass (using the inputs indicated in 9.5.4.5) and this second bandpass run is for a secondary improvement

a or b? or I am missing something else?
