It looks like the CookBook remark is incorrect.  To use scalar averaging of the visibilities one sets BPASSP(8) to 1.  But that will still have phase.  To do amplitude only, one uses the autocorrelation data by setting BPASSP(1) to 1.  BPASSP(8) = 1 is not really a good idea.
