It is important never to run aips or install it as root.The data files in the data are are all named with an extensionwhich is a base-36 version of the user number.  Thus a typical filename would be MAD001001.010; where 010 is base 36 for usernumber 36 (my assigned number).  The first 001 is catalog entry number 1 (also base 36).  Another file name would be MAD004001.0B9;for catalog number 4 user 405.Inside aips there are verbs EHEX and REHEX which from decimal toextended hex and back.  If your path is set right, these names arealso scripts available outside aips.Eric Greisen
