It is important never to run aips or install it as root.<br /><br />The data files in the data are are all named with an extension<br />which is a base-36 version of the user number.  Thus a typical file<br />name would be MAD001001.010; where 010 is base 36 for user<br />number 36 (my assigned number).  The first 001 is catalog entry <br />number 1 (also base 36).  Another file name would be MAD004001.0B9;<br />for catalog number 4 user 405.<br /><br />Inside aips there are verbs EHEX and REHEX which from decimal to<br />extended hex and back.  If your path is set right, these names are<br />also scripts available outside aips.<br /><br />Eric Greisen<br />
