Congratulations on your new large-size screen.  When XAS starts up it
defaults char_mult to a value set by the screen height and width.  I
suspect you are getting a 2.    The verb CHARMULT 0.5 is actually 1.0
(it only goes by integers) and that is what you prefer.

To avoid the default value put a line in your .Xdefaults file like

AIPStv*charMult:               1

Then when XAS starts up, it queries the .Xdefaults and sets the value
you request.
