Hi Eric,

I’m getting some quotes for an AIPS machine to continue working on my M31 and M33 data after the kindness of the VLA computing facility runs out and I loose my remote account.  Can you provide any guidance regarding appropriate hardware specs?

I’m giving vendors the CASA hardware requirements for a “recommended low end workstation” http://casa.nrao.edu/casa_hardware-requirements.shtml but with 64 GB of memory instead of 32, because I’ve been monitoring AIPS running IMAGR on 8192-channel jobs using TOP and see that it always uses 40-50 GB.  I have the impression that AIPS won’t run much faster by increasing the number of cores over the 8 cores of that recommended low end workstation...  it that right?  I understand that I/O is the bottleneck and am toying with the idea of using SSDs instead of spinning storage...

I have 33 fields of 8192 channels and it takes IMAGR 16 hours to image all channels in one field on the AOC Lustre system (half of the fields are 20 minutes on-source; others only 5 minutes) so I expect that that whatever machine I buy will take considerably longer.
