Are you planning to write your own AIPS tasks?  If not, you  should
use the binary installation rather than the text installation.  The
modern versions of gfortran all have the issues you report and I
have not had a chance to look into it.  gfortran 4.4.7 does seem to
work.

Later versions might if you can find options to insist that memory be
zeroed in advance and variable values kept between invocations of
subroutines.  These are mistakes which I suspect may be in our code.
