A different thought.  Are you running on machine X including
tv=local, but with the actual windows on machine Y?  AIPS
anticipates this and turns off shared memory, but it can do
that only if the $DISPLAY variable actually shows the display
to be different from the execution machine (X).  Thus, when
I log in to pilabo from primate, $DISPLAY is set to
localhost:10.0
and AIPS sees that the display is different than pilabo and
warns me that it is turning off the shared memory (which cannot
work between machines).

You can also set up a .Xdefaults file in your home area and tell AIPS
not to use shared memory.  See HELP XAS for details of all the
options available.
