Then something is really wrong.  Are you using FTP for any of the disks?
Writing across FTP is usually very slow.  If the message file is 
accessed over a normal inter-computer link with FTP then each message 
line can take 1-2 seconds as opposed to 1-2 millisec.  FTP does not 
allow the OS to cache a disk file in RAM and so all 
opens/reads/writes/closes must be done strictly is sequence.

Does FITLD take a normal cpu/real ratio on this machine or is it 3 sec 
of cpu to 5 minutes of real?  If the FTP idea does not apply then I am 
baffled and forced to conclude your machine is ill.  What is the page 
rate on the machine?  Is the memory all used up so that AIPS tasks 
thrash for the little memory that they normally require?
