New Staff Reply: Text installation of AIPS on Ubuntu 11.04 (gcc, gforgran 4.5.2)

Comments:
(1) The Makefile for XAS is for the Intel compiler and so
the options are not expected to be correct
(2) I do not know what this "fortify" thing is. AIPS tasks
may not be completely innocent of buffer overflows but
an old chestnut like PRTUV which is heavily used by me
will have no deliberate buffer overflows and is very
unlikely to have any accidental ones. I worry that gfortran
at 4.5 is doing something strange. It would be nice to run it
in debug and see where the overflow occurs... Unfortunately
the gfortran here is 4.1.2 which is ancient and known not to
    work.
(3) The number of bits for Y2K are probably reasonable for a
rather different compiler. The APRES has always given what
I thought was too high a value so seeing a lower value there
is not a surprise. The VTESS numbers are a bit low too.
(4) We do see this compiler abort some - it is not a worry if
the tasks are lower priority and relatively fast. I use PRTAB
all the time but it is fast. As I wrote before, it does not
have the type of error that caused this issue with the g77
    I use all the time.
