New Client Reply: Text installation of AIPS on Ubuntu 11.04 (gcc, gforgran 4.5.2)

Since I've got the text install apparently working, I can just use that, or I may go the
route of having two AIPS, as you suggest. The private version I mostly need is of
OMFIT, which I have made a few modifications to. My hacked version is probably
not that suitable for public release with AIPS. However, being able to simultaeously
fit a model and the complex antenna gains is very useful, but a better solution would
probably be to rewrite OMFIT and rationalize it somewhat (e.g., print out a real
chi2 instead of some internally scaled version which is useless for comparson with
that obtained from other data sets; allowing it to use WEIGHTIT; making it produce
a real SN table). I realize, however, that this is probably not the top of your
priority list :-)

As an alternative to giving me an account to compile stuff using the intel compilers,
you could consider running it as an interactive service through the web for anyone.
The .FOR code, after all, comes with all distributions, so any user who knows some
Fortran programming could edit the code to suit their particular ends and/or to test
their own fixes for any aips bugs. You just upload your .FOR and .OPT file, and then
have a script run it through the compiler, and you can download the .EXE. It could probably
be sandboxed so as to be reasonably secure, and given that the compilation is pretty
AIPS specific, the likelyhood of abuse or overuse seems small.

         cheers, michael
