But you did not read the help files.

Look at the help for MSGSRV and TEKSRV and you will see environment
variables that can be set to point at other terminal emulators.

Another suggestion.

cp $SYSUNIX/{XA,UNIX}SERVERS $SYSLOCAL

then edit the two files in $SYSLOCAL to remove the comment symbol (#)
from the two lines in each with the -hold command.  This will cause
the two windows to remain visible when the program being run in them
fails.  This lets you see any error messages.

We would have heard long ago if xterm in ubuntu does not work.
