this all sounds good so I cannot tell what went wrong

The edit of DADEVS.LIST has worked.

This error (no aips 1 message file) can be cured by entering 1
as the user number with password AMANAGER. Then do restart and enter
whatever user number you want.

This error is serious and says that SYSETUP did not work
correctly. The data area
/disk/xray4/xraysw/linux/aips/DA00/MSSLLT/
should contain a bunch of files. For example on my machine they are
primate<196>$ cd /home/AIPS/DA00/PRIMATE
/home/AIPS/DA00/PRIMATE
primate<197>$ ls
ACD000000; BAD001008; BAD002007; MED000003; MED00000B; TPD001003;
BAD001001; BAD001009; BAD002008; MED000004; PWD000000;@ TPD001004;
BAD001002; BAD002001; BAD002009; MED000005; SPACE TPD001005;
BAD001003; BAD002002; BQD000000; MED000006; SPD000000; TPD001006;
BAD001004; BAD002003; GRD000000;@ MED000007; TCD000001; TPD001007;
BAD001005; BAD002004; ICD000000; MED000008; TDD000004; TPD001008;
BAD001006; BAD002005; MED000001; MED000009; TPD001001; TPD001009;
BAD001007; BAD002006; MED000002; MED00000A; TPD001002; TPD00100A;
primate<198>$
Note that the PW and GR files are links to the one in the template
area so that all machines share these. That is a nicety that is
unimportant these days. Try just copying the files from
/disk/xray4/xraysw/linux/aips/DA00/????/
where ???? is the old machine name to
/disk/xray4/xraysw/linux/aips/DA00/MSSLLT/
Installing a new version is now easy. Go to the directory
/disk/xray4/xraysw/linux/aips/
get the file at
ftp.aoc.nrao.edu/pub/software/aips/31DEC07/install.pl
Then check for a file in your home directory named .AIPSRC which you
may have to edit. then do
perl install.pl -n
where the -n says network => binary installation of load modules that
will run faster than ones compiled with the gnu compiler.
