[daip] AIPS Data Importing

Hello,

I have recently changed institutions and would like to import data
(in AIPS format) that I worked with in my previous position. I will
try to be as specific as I can with what changes have occurred and
what data I have.

First off, I was running AIPS previously on a PowerPC Mac G5 desktop
system. I was using an array of user numbers to differentiate among
multiple projects. So, in my AIPS data area, I have a few thousand
files with standard AIPS nomenclature (e.g., MAD01M001.1XL;,
MAD00C001.1XG;, MAD001001.1XJ;, to name just a few files with
different user numbers). All of these files were saved onto a
portable disk & transported to my new institution.

I now have a small cluster of Intel-based Mac systems, each with AIPS
31DEC07 successfully operating on it. I would like to import the
data I was using previously into the relevant data areas. So, I have
tried to simply copy these files into the DATA area as defined during
my AIPS installations. I get error messages that look something like
the following:

AIPS 1: Loading a brand new POPS vocabulary

Copying files from the previous DA00 directory to the new one does
not solve the problem; in fact, if I do this, AIPS does not start at
all. I have also attempted to create any requisite missing files by
starting AIPS with a given userid and performing a few generic
operations on a test image. Subsequent copying of the files into the
DATA and DA00 directories still does not work.

I find only sparse documentation on this particular issue. One
potentially relevant thread is the following: http://
listmgr.cv.nrao.edu/pipermail/daip/2000-June/000397.html

Am I understanding that discussion correctly, that it may not be
possible to read PowerPC-formatted files using an Intel machine? I
hope this is not the case, because much work will have to be
reproduced......

Can you please advise on how to proceed?

Thanks so much,
John
