The undefined LD_LIBRARY_PATH says that your startup files are not
doing the 
   setenv AIPS_ROOT <whatever>
   source $AIPS_ROOT/LOGIN.CSH
(or bash equivalent) properly.

This is rather system dependent - the .cshrc, .tcshrc, or .bashrc
files are executed when an xterm is started (which depends on your
default shell).  A .login file may be done only when first logging in.
Furthermore, be sure that the startup file does the same thing on
interactive logins and non-interactive logins.
