So far as I know, there is nothing wrong with Debian.  But the 3.3.x
flavors of GNU compiler have indeed shown problems.  As my example to
you shows, we use 3.2.3 (but 3.2.2 is fine).  I suggest installing a
3.2.3 or thereabouts compiler on your Debian machine and rebuilding
aips.  Compiler installation instructions may be found off the aips
web page - http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/aips.

It is possible that a binary installation might work you could try

     perl  install.pl -n

The -n does the binary.  But our OS is not Debian so I would not be
suprised if it didn't work.
