I put in my login file a

export AIPS_ROOT=<whatever it is>
. $AIPS_ROOT/LOGIN.SH

You can do these by hand (probably already have many times) for now.

Then one can just say aips or AIPS and it should run.  Try this first
before worrying about the X windows bit depth.  It will tell you if it
is wrong (sort of anyway).
