I appreciate the prompt response.  The short story is, I'm installing
the 31DEC04 version available here: 
http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/aips/dec04.shtml

I was using the gnu compiler because, for the life of me, I can't find
where the SUN compiler is on the machines I have.  If I leave the
settings to default...no C compilers work.

I'll try to get the SUN compilers working, if it'll fix it.  Many thanks.
