http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/aips/aipsmgr/index.html gives information on the problem with visuals - you have only a 16-bit visual set up and you need to change it to 24/32-bit. Linux boxes all come with the 16-bit as the default and that is useless for science. Eric Greisen
