Amy told you the basics on this. The real issue on data files is
that the computer's name must appear the file name in DADEVS.LIST and
matching in NETSP. Sites like ours have > 100 computers and they want
only their data areas (at least by default) so the name recognition is
necessary. The simplest way to do this is have DADEVS and NETSP refer
to files as e.g. /home/AIPS/DATA/HOST_1, /home/AIPS/DATA/HOST_2, etc
where /home/AIPS should be replaced by your $AIPS_ROOT and HOST is the
host name. These files are not themselves directories but rather link
files to directories (of any name you like) on host HOST.

More questions than ideas - were they of different architecture?
A Solaris set of AIPS files will not be recognized by Linux and vice
versa - and any attempt to do so could damage the contents. The only
way to transfer data from Solaris to Linux is to write them out with
FITTP or FITAB using a Solaris aips and then read them back in with
FITLD on the Linux aips. We offer procs to help with this.
(WRTPROCS).

If the architectures are the same, yes.
