My bet is that he's running gnome or kde, and because the TV etc. start
up iconified, he didn't notice them.  If he has a panel with a window
list applet running, they'll be in there.  

One way to test this is to try:

   xterm -iconic

and if he says "nothing happened", then this is the problem.  He needs
to find the applet on his panel that has the "icons" or put one on the
panel for them.  Under gnome it's a right click on a blank part of the
panel, followed by selecting "add to panel", "utility", and "window
list".
