The AIPS Managers' FAQ page on our web site addresses this.  The
default visual on Linux machines is a 16-bit TrueColor which would not
be useful for science and so I have refused to support it.  You need
to chaange to a 24/32-bit TrueColor or an 8-bit PseudoColor visual.
