       The + sign means that the disk files are REQUIRED for all
computers using the installation.  This means - if there is more than
one computer - that every computer must mount every other computer's
disks and then read them every time a file is created.  I do not have
exact timings for that operation but I know that one writes 100's of
messages per second to a local disk and approximately 1/second toa
non-local disk over NFS.   The catch for non-required disks is that
the host name must appear in the directory name.  Thus my machine
(primate) has in our (enormous) DADEVS.LIST file
      /DATA/PRIMATE_1
      /DATA/PRIMATE_2
      /DATA/PRIMATE_3
Needless to say these are just link files to the real directories.
