I will bet that the machine on which you wrote this tape was
configured to have a fixed block size (e.g. 512 bytes).  You must
always run PRTTP on any tape you write just to confirm its
reliability.  WE have a vague memory that this can be controlled in
softwre but we can't find any place where it is - perhaps that has to
be an installation (system) parameter.  Where did you write this
tape?

FRING should work fine on a single-source file.
