[MODEST] getting started

Dear Colleagues:

In the week after our MODEST-1 workshop, we have started to gather
material for a summary paper.  I am currently editing a draft, and
we will soon put it up on our web site for review.  In the process
we stumbled upon some technical questions, which I will pose in the
next email.

     A note on protocol: this list is not moderated, so we all have to
use our own judgment in trying to keep our messages clear and simple.
If some threads get too detailed, the contributors may want to switch
to their own direct email exchange, until they have sorted things out,
at which point they can summarize their conclusion for the whole group.
This will protect most of the 60 people on this list who might not be
interested in all the details.
