             Fitsverify Program Release Announcement

A new FITS file verification program called 'fitsverify' is now available
from the HEASARC. This program is designed to rigorously test whether a
FITS file conforms to all the file format requirements and keyword usage
requirements as defined in the FITS 'Standard' definition document and in
the recently approved FITS World Coordinate System papers. Fitsverify can
be used to generated a detailed verification report for a single FITS file,
or alternatively, fitsverify can be used in 'quiet' mode (with the -q
switch) to verify an entire directory full of files, producing a 1-line
'pass/fail' verification message for each file.

Fitsverify is freely available from the HEASARC web site at:

 http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/software/ftools/fitsverify/

Prebuilt executable versions of the program are available for Sun/solaris,
Linux PC, and Windows PC machines. The C source code is also available for
compiling and linking on most other platforms (it only needs to be linked
with the CFITSIO library, also available from the HEASARC).

Fitsverify is a stand-alone executable version of the 'fverify' task that is
distributed with the FTOOLS software package. It was developed and
continues to be maintained by FTOOLS programmers at the HEASARC. Please
send any questions, problems, or suggestions regarding fitsverify to the
FTOOLS help desk at http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/ftoolshelp
