NOAO uses OBSERVAT ("KPNO", "NSO", "CTIO", "WIYN") and DETECTOR ("t2kb"
or whatever for the particular CCD or IR array). We don't use INSTITUT
or NETWORK (although I could ask the GONG folks). We also use INSTRUME
(e.g., "pfccd") and TELESCOP ("kp4m"). This usage is also not merely
informational. The ICE CCD data acquisition control software, for
instance, uses TELESCOP, INSTRUME and DETECTOR to control its behavior
depending on the observing context. Specifying a different value for
DETECTOR results in loading different metacode into the CCD controller.
Specifying a different TELESCOP or INSTRUME changes the interaction
with those subsystems.
