[evla-sw-discuss] Java timebomb

As I mentioned the EVLA S/W meeting this morning there's a time
bomb with Java where we'll need to upgrade by July 18th.

I also mentioned that Oracle was releasing a new version today.

Well it turns it (or at least appears) that the java plugin phones
home to Oracle when it loads and Oracle informs the plugin what
the latest version is. As of 4:20 pm MDT that was 1.7.0.25
rather than 1.7.0.21 which we currently install.

This meant new java plugin clients will refuse to load remote
content. I was doing tests to a remote network testing site that
was java based, it worked at 4:15, stopped at 4:20.

For now do not restart your browser, if you already had the plugin
loaded it will keep working, it only breaks on start up. This
is particularly true for the operators.

Kscott and I have found two semi-independent work-arounds, they're
clumsy. We'll revisit this in the morning and figure out what
to do and pass that info on.

I'm cc'ing the other sites as a heads up and also in case we've
overlooked something and only we're having this problem.

James
