    Mostly I'd like to see us create a clearing house
doc that lists ports/IP/Mcast addressing.   I'm putting(1)
some various wiki pages together .. I can add them
there.

    That said there is some chance of known port collision
below 32K, for instance 30001-30004 is used for Pago Services
(whatever the heck that is).

    Ports above 40 or 50K are typically not used for 'well
known services'.(2)

1) This should probably be taken to more correctly
mean 'I will be putting'

2) Interesting side note ... some numbnut at Redhat decided
that sort hadn't really worked well the last 2 decades and
changed it.  Sorting something like /etc/services with
sort +1n /etc/services to get the services file in numeric
order no longer works in RHEL5.1.   God I hate OS developers.
