with the possibility of using > 100 multicast ports, we should 
definitely get our **** together regarding usage of addresses and ports 
for all the multicast.  even if we can't change the old stuff 
immediately to support it, this new set of addresses and ports should 
conform to some standard.  we should dig up james' email and come to 
agreement on that standard for such address+port assignment...
