it needs to be right. it can't be 3.5 hours off. if it's within seconds that's
fine for most cases (there will just be some missed data at the beginning or end
of scans). if it's off by a significant fraction of the scan duration
(typically minutes to 10's of minutes) or more, that's a problem.
