I tend to agree with Kevin.  The main difference seems to be that they
wisely decided not to write their own 'make' and 'SCCS' for Unix.  
These are mature tools that work well, and I'd like to keep using them.
(One of my quarrels with java as a language is that 'javac' includes some
of the functionality of 'make' so one is tempted to dispense with it.  
But it really isn't near as smart as 'make', and doesn't do as good a job.)
(Have I offended everybody yet?)
