VERSION is an adverb to INPUTS, GO, HELP etc.  Enter TYPE VERSION to see if it has some contents.  Then type VERSION=''
If I say HELP XXX I get the error message you see (saying XXX) because it does not exist.  But I am confused by your reply.
Typing task = 'bdflist' cannot in any ordinary way produce the message TEXT FOR ..., ':')TYPE = PNAME(I+1:I+2)C Form wild card file nameC specification.IF (NCH.GT.0) THENWCNAME = MNAME(1:NCH) // '*'ELSEWCNAME = '*'END IFWLEN = NCH + 1C Create complete file spec (ZDIRC will append proper extension)CALL ZDIR (TYPE, VERSON, WCNAME, FILSPC, IERR)C Find all the matches (IEXT = 0
I suspect that VERSION is set but I cannot make this message appear for any real task.  The code uses your VERSION value first and then the version (TST, NEW, OLD) used to start the aips.  That way it always should find something.  If dealing with the version adverbs does not help, exit aips.
cd $AIPS_ROOT
, ':')TYPE = PNAME(I+1:I+2)C Form wild card file nameC specification.IF (NCH.GT.0) THENWCNAME = MNAME(1:NCH) // '*'ELSEWCNAME = '*'END IFWLEN = NCH + 1C Create complete file spec (ZDIRC will append proper extension)CALL ZDIR (TYPE, VERSON, WCNAME, FILSPC, IERR)C Find all the matches (IEXT = 0source LOGIN.CSH     (or . LOGIN.SH for bask shells)
$CDTST
cd $HLPFIL
ls
This should confirm that the help files are actually there.  Try aips over again.
