Hi Chris,

If you have a Mac.  I use can use a procedure similar to you:

ssh -Y ssh.aoc.nrao.edu
ssh -Y thoth
aips tv=local

works for me.  However I prefer to use screen sharing, to run aips on my 
desktop and screen share through VNC.  This way if the connection is 
lost, aips and whatever tasks I am running are still running on my desktop.
