Hi Eric,
1. Yes, we have some of our own reduction tasks that we were using for a previous version of AIPS (31DEC07) that we were looking to update.
2. We had installed and used 2.95.3 for the 31DEC07 installation, since the machine’s overarching versions are 3.4.6, 4.4.4, and 4.4.7. (As a note, I’m just one of the users for this machine and don’t have root privileges.) My understanding from www.aips.nrao.edu/compiler.shtml was that 2.95.3 was the recommended compiler in that case.
3. Yes, it’s 32-bit. “uname -m” returns “i686”.
Thanks,
Taylor

Three questions:
1. Why are you compiling locally - do you plan to write your own AIPS tasks?
2. Where did you find such an old compiler? gfortran is up around version 7
at present and I do not think gfortran even had versions less than 4. I
seem to remember g77 as 2.95. gfortran started to work with version 5 something
versions 4 something mostly had strange problems.
3 Are you using a 32-bit computer? The addressing issues you report suggest
that you are, or have chosen to force AIPS to think you are.
