The last reply is messed up - I tried to use e-mail rather than this tool.

I was suggesting ./START_AIPS but realize that the permission denied could 
be coming from deep inside that script or even the script it invokes from there
($SYSUNIX/AIPSEXEC) or even from the load modules in $LOAD (ZSTRTA.EXE, AIPS.EXE)

If the START_AIPS idea does not work then I guess I might have to start putting
echo "something or other"
to find out where it is failing.

Take a look at /usr/local/lib with ls -l.  There should be execute (x) privilege for all
classes of user "lrwxr-xr-x" on all files.
