Good to hear that you have found a work-around.

The issue is the setting of $DISPLAY when you log in
remotely.  I have found that most machines around here
do it correctly, but occasionally one does not.

To set up controls, in your home area on the server,
create a file called .Xdefaults.  Put in it whatever commands
you might want (there are some for aips message server
and Tek server also).  The commands in the help file may
be used literally if you want.  The important line is

AIPStv*useSharedMemory:       0

where the zero means do not use.  The rest of the characters
must be copied exactly and start in column 1 of the file.  This
file is useful in overriding defaults such as the number of lines
of memory in xterms.

xterm*saveLines:         10000
