You are right as usual Eric :-)

I'd overlooked the crucial "E" differentiating 
/home/aips/TEXT/IONS/VLA.GAINS  from
/home/aips/TEXT/IONS/EVLA.GAINS

So the difference *does* lie in the text file.  It would be good to fix EVLA.GAINS - although at X-band the differences are not large because the gaincurve is pretty flat, they're up to 5-6% for some antennas, so not
insignificant.  They may be worse at frequencies where the gaincurve matters.
