The ~/.Xdefaults file is not required to exist but has many uses.  You 
can create one with your favorite editor.  I will attach my Linux one 
which shows a very developed one (I mostly inherited this from various 
systems guys).  Things like
xterm*saveLines:	10000
are very nice - lots of scroll-back memory.
