It depends on what you mean by adaptive smoothing.  There is an adaptive 
histogram equalization routine call AHIST.  There is also a useful task 
NINER which does a 3x3 matrix convolution to do things like edge 
detecting and the sort - or anything you can program into 9 numbers.
