New Staff Reply: asymmetry in gethead puthead

PUTHEAD is allowed to do only those things that do not change
the structure of the data on disk. GETHEAD gets additional
parameters that cobtrol that structure.

In particular, the IF structure affects the structure of
essentially all table extension files as well as the UV data
on disk. Real and difficult programs (VBGLU) are needed
to do this.

I suggest reading the CookBook.
