New Staff Reply: VLA UV data and Hanning smoothing

(1) there is a bit that is set in the raw EXPORT data format that indicates hanning smoothing, but it's not ever exposed after the data is filled into AIPS. however, just looking at the number of IFs, the channel width, and the number of channels, will tell you. take the result you get for those three values, and then go to: http://www.vla.nrao.edu/astro/guides/sline/current/node31.html and http://www.vla.nrao.edu/astro/guides/sline/current/node32.html and see where your dataset fits. there is a unique mapping into those two tables that will tell you whether it's normal or hanning-smoothed.

(2) there are many AIPS tasks that will smooth data and write out the result. SPLIT, UVAVG, AVSPC, UVLSF, UVMTH, UVMOD, etc. just set input parameters appropriately so that the result only does the hanning smoothing (if it's something that combines datasets or does something to the data). also, hanning smoothing can be applied along the way in most of the standard calibration tasks like CALIB, BPASS, PCAL, etc.
