New Ticket: VLA UV data and Hanning smoothing

Hi,

I'm trying to combine spectral line data taken during the VLA-EVLA transition period with VLA data from the archive. The archival data likely has online hanning smoothing applied, while none of the EVLA-VLA transition data does due to NRAO recommendations.

I have a two-part question:
1) What is the best way to check if an archival data set has online hanning smoothing applied? Is there a task in AIPS that will do this?

2) What is the best way to apply offline hanning smoothing to the VLA-EVLA transition data in AIPS? My understanding of online hanning smoothing is that every other channel is retained after smoothing with the kernel. In AIPS I've found CVEL, which appears to apply hanning smoothing but keeps every channel, and XSMTH, which only works in the image plane. I'd like to apply the off-line hanning smoothing in the UV plane.

We're using the old 31DEC08 AIPS version so that our data are all consistently calibrated and imaged.

Thanks,
Adrienne
