It is good that you solved the xterm issue.  Another user
seemed unable to do so...

The XAS thing is odd.  XAS normally issues many messages
as it starts up and these help diagnose issues if there 
are any.  Check your $LOAD area for a file named XAS and
see if it is executable.

I am assuming that you took my advice and installed the binary
version.  In that case, there should be a file 
do_daily.hostname in your $HOME directory where hostname is
localhost or the name of your computer.  In that case, you can 
delete the XAS in the $LOAD area and execute the do_daily script
which will copy a new version of XAS.  It is magic thinking but
worth a try...
