have you had any better luck?  On leopard and then snow leopard the X 
Windows is very changed.  It is now very wrong to do the setenv command. 
  One should not set DISPLAY at all - let the system do the tricks it 
does.  I suspect that having set the DISPLAY, any command that causes 
the msgserver to be used will need passwords because the system is 
treating that window as a separate computer.

Let me know how things are going - this level of change has been done by 
several users without much problem.
