New Staff Reply: 31DEC10 compiling with gcc

gcc is not a Fortran compiler. You must select gfortran
as the FORT and LINK software. The Intel compiler options
are not correct for gfortran/gcc. See the $SYSLINUX versions
(or $SYSLNX64) of FDEFAULT.SH, CCOPTS.SH, and LDOPTS.SH for
the case statement on the compilers.

Note that the gfortran load modules are slower than the Intel
ones. gfortran has gotten better so they may not be as
far behind as they were - with g77 it was almost 40-50% which
is very significant. You need to do a local compile only if
you plane to develop your own AIPS code.
